Sharing Links and Shortcuts

Note: This content is no longer updated. For the latest content, please go to the user guide for M-Files Online. For information on the supported product versions, refer to our lifecycle policy.

M-Files users can have vault connections with different names, and each user can have customized views. With M-Files, you can create shortcuts that the user customizations have no effect on.

Using the Get Hyperlink Dialog

Use the Get Hyperlink context menu item to create links or shortcuts to documents.

For instructions on how to create links to objects, files, and views in M-Files Web, refer to Creating M-Files Web URLs.

To create a link or shortcut:

  1. In M-Files, right-click an object in the listing area and select Get Hyperlink.
  2. Select one of these options:
    Select...To...
Create Windows shortcut (.lnk) Create a shortcut that opens the selected object in the default application for the file format.
Create M-Files shortcut (.mflink) Create a shortcut that opens the selected object in M-Files Desktop.
Send M-Files shortcut (.mflink) by e-mail Open a new email message with the M-Files shortcut as an attachment.
Copy hyperlink to clipboard Copy the object hyperlink to your clipboard in the HTML format. You can paste the link for example to an email message. You can also enter the path to Windows File Explorer to open the object in M-Files.

To copy the link in the plain text format, select and copy the text from the text field and click Cancel.

  3. Optional: Click Advanced to specify the target version.
  4. Optional: In Target version, select one of these options:
    OptionDescription
Latest version The relationship always points to the latest version of the target object.
Specific version The relationship points to the selected version of the target object. The relationship does not show updates to the object.
  5. Click OK.
Tip:

You can change the plain text URL command for the link to do something different than to open the object.

Command Action
show Opens the object in M-Files Desktop.
showmetadata Shows the metadata card for the object.
open Shows the check-out dialog and opens the document in the default application.
view Opens the document in the default application in the read-only mode.
edit Checks out the object and opens it for editing in the default application.

For example, the command m-files://edit/<vault GUID>/<object type ID>-<object ID>?object=<object GUID> checks out the document and opens it for editing in the default application.

The Appearance of Hyperlinks

You can ask your administrator to change how the hyperlinks are shown. For more information, see Changing the Appearance of Hyperlinks.
