Using M-Files Desktop User Interface
This section is about the M-Files Desktop user interface. Click on different parts of the screenshot below for a description of the areas in the user interface.

Assigned
Click the Assigned tab to see the documents that are assigned to you.
Connection status
- The round-trip time to the server is less than 50 milliseconds.
- The round-trip time to the server is from 50 to 149 milliseconds.
- The round-trip time to the server is from 150 to 299 milliseconds.
- The round-trip time to the server is 300 milliseconds or more.
- You have no connection to the server.
Click the connection status icon () to see more information about your connection. This opens the Connection Status dialog. If your connection is slow or there is no connection to the server, contact your M-Files system administrator. Click Refresh to refresh the information of your connection status. Click Analyze Connection to see more details about your connection status.
Creating objects
Click Create to create a document or an object. For more information on how to create documents and objects, see Creating a Document and Creating Non-Document Objects.
Favorites
Click the Favorites tab to see a view of the documents and objects that you have added there. You can add objects to your favorites and remove them in the context menu or in the metadata card of an object.
You can also click the Favorites shortcut in the task area to go to your Favorites view.
Filters
When you search for an object or a document, you can use the advanced search features on the Filters tab. In the Filters tab, you can give more specific search criteria for your search. For more information, see Filters Tab.
Home screen
When you log in to M-Files Desktop, the Home screen opens in the listing area. To go to the Home screen from other views, click the Home tab or the M-Files logo.
Listing area
The listing area in M-Files Desktop usually contains views and objects. For more information, see Listing Area.
Metadata card
To see and change the metadata of the selected object, use the metadata card. For more information, see Object Metadata and Metadata Card.
Pinned
The Pinned tab lets you collect items that you frequently use into a single tab. For more information, see Pinned Tab.
Preview
In the preview mode, you can browse and copy the content of the selected document. For more information, see Preview Tab.
Recent
Click the Recent tab to see a view of the documents and objects that you have recently accessed.
Right pane
The contents of the Metadata, Preview, Filters, and Pinned tabs are shown in the right pane. To hide the right pane, click the gray vertical tab on the left edge of the right pane.
Searching
Use the search bar in the top of the user interface to find your documents and other objects. For more information, see Searching.
Task area
In the task area, you can see shortcuts to different M-Files Desktop operations. For more information, see Task area.
