Sharing to M-Files Users

You can share links to other M-Files users with the Copy Link, Send Link by E-mail, and Get Hyperlink options. The recipient must have access to the vault and the file or view to open the link.

Sharing links with the Copy Link option

To share a link to an M-Files user with the Copy Link option, right-click an object or a view in the listing area and select Copy Link. As a result, the link is copied to your clipboard and you can share the link to other M-Files users.

Note: The classic M-Files Web does not support the Copy Link operation.

Sharing links by email

To share a link to an M-Files user by email, right-click an object in the listing area and select Sharing, E-mail and PDF > Send Link by E-mail. As a result, M-Files creates an email message with a link to the selected file.

Sharing shortcuts and hyperlinks with the Get Hyperlink option

To share an M-Files shortcut or hyperlink to an M-Files user with the Get Hyperlink option:

  1. Right-click an object in the listing area and select Get Hyperlink.
  2. Select one of these options:
    OptionDescription
Create Windows shortcut (.lnk) Create a shortcut that opens the selected object in the default application for the file format.
Create M-Files shortcut (.mflink) Create a shortcut that opens the selected object in M-Files Desktop.
Send M-Files shortcut (.mflink) by e-mail Open a new email message with the M-Files shortcut as an attachment.
Copy hyperlink to clipboard Copy the object hyperlink to your clipboard in the HTML format. You can paste the link for example to an email message. You can also enter the path to Windows File Explorer to open the object in M-Files.

To copy the link in the plain text format, select and copy the text from the text field and click Cancel.

  3. Optional: Click Advanced to specify the target version.
  4. Optional: In Target version, select one of these options:
    OptionDescription
Latest version The relationship always points to the latest version of the target object.
Specific version The relationship points to the selected version of the target object. The relationship does not show updates to the object.
  5. Click OK.
Tip:

You can change the plain text URL command for the link to do something different than to open the object.

Command Action
show Opens the object in M-Files Desktop.
showmetadata Shows the metadata card for the object.
open Shows the check-out dialog and opens the document in the default application.
view Opens the document in the default application in the read-only mode.
edit Checks out the object and opens it for editing in the default application.

For example, the command m-files://edit/<vault GUID>/<object type ID>-<object ID>?object=<object GUID> checks out the document and opens it for editing in the default application.
