Managing relationships between objects

In M-Files, information is interconnected. Many documents and other objects are related to each other. In addition to M-Files automatically creating these relationships based on metadata, you can add, edit, and delete them yourself. These instructions tell you how to do that.

Creating relationships

To create a relationship:

  1. Open the context menu of the item from which you want to create the relationship.
  2. Select Relationships > Create relationship.
  3. Optional: Select Show filters to open the filtering section.
  4. In Which object to link to?, enter all or part of the name of the object to which you want to create the relationship.
  5. In the list of results, select the object to link to.
  6. Select Next.
  7. In Which version to link to?, select the latest version or a specific version.
    • Latest version: The relationship points to the latest version. If a new version is created later, the relationship points to that version.
    • Version: The relationship points to the selected version. If a new version is created later, the relationship still points to the version you selected here.
  8. Select Create relationship.

Removing relationships

To remove relationships:

  1. Open the context menu of the object whose relationships you want to remove.
  2. Select Relationships > Remove relationship.
  3. Do one of these steps:

    1. In Relationships to remove, select which relationships you want to remove.
    2. Select Remove selected relationships.

Changing a relationship's target version

To change which version the relationship points to:

  1. Open the context menu for the object whose relationship you want to edit.
  2. Select Relationships > Change target version.
  3. In Which relationship to edit?, select the relationship that you want to change.
  4. In Which version to link to?, do one of these steps:
    • Select Latest version to always point to the most recent version of the linked object.
      or
    • Select Version and choose a specific version to always point to that version.
  5. Select Change version.
